Abstract
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and concentrated fructose corn syrup (CFCS) have been produced by means of enzymatic isomerization of glucose to fructose worldwide in recent years. The production and demand for the fructose syrup continue to increase, and wide variety of new applications have been developed. At the same time the operation of the glucose isomerase reactor system have been improved significantly. Many refinements in terms of reactor design and the operating conditions have also been made.
Recently, we studied the design of the glucose isomerase reactor system as well as the optimal operating conditions, and found that there is a room for further improvements in both respects. The enzyme reactor design could be improved based on enzyme reaction kinetics and the mass transfer consideration in the column reactor system. For instance, the height to diameter ratio was found to be one of such important factors for the productivity improvement. Variable temperature control throughout operating period could improve the fructose yield by as much as 8%. A continuous ramping function type temperature control improves the productivity as compared with a constant temperature control. The details of the design analysis, reaction kinetics, and the optimization method will be presented and discussed.
